Christy Walton and I recently had the opportunity to present to Career Day in the local school district, where 30 Forensics students asked excellent questions about our work.
Will these future Crime Scene Investigators solve future big cases using a bit of what they learned from Dancestors?
The Forensic Crime Solver in the article below worries that there could be a regression in the field as the beat the street types often prefer old-fashioned police work.
THE FIRST TIME I PARTICIPATED IN CAREER DAY, IT WAS WITH A 5TH-GRADE CLASS
** In reviewing with the class some family history lore, I mentioned that my Great-Great Grandfather while serving with the Lamar Rifles Co G., 11th Mississippi missed the Battle of Gettysburg because he had dysentery. There was one kid who knew what dysentery was and she told the class. It was the highlight of their school day.
It was a good thing my ancestor was sick that day or I would not be here as the 11th MS had an 87% casualty rate as they led the way in Pickett’s ill-fated charge. One of the companies in the 11th had this story:
The University Greys (or Grays) were Company A of the 11th Mississippi Infantry Regiment in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
Their name “University Greys” derived from the gray color of the men’s uniforms, and almost all of the Greys were students at the University of Mississippi. Nearly the entire student body (135 men) enlisted; only four students reported for classes in fall 1861, so few that the university closed temporarily.
The most famous engagement of the University Greys was at Pickett’s Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg when the Confederates made a desperate frontal assault on the Union entrenchments atop Cemetery Ridge. The Greys penetrated further into the Union position than any other unit, but at the terrible cost of sustaining 100% casualties—every soldier was either killed or wounded.
After Gettysburg, the depleted Greys were merged with Company G (the “Lamar Rifles”), and the unit continued to fight until the last days of the war.

John Tyler who was born in 1790, has a living grandson.
Tyler married his second wife was Julia Gardiner at age 54
Tyler was 63 when his son Lyon Gardiner Tyler a noted genealogist was born in 1853.
Lyon ended up marrying a much younger woman and kept growing his own branch of the family tree well into his 70’s.
That included a son Harrison, who was born in 1928 and is still alive today!
Harrison celebrated his 93rd birthday just this month.
Amazingly, another one of John Tyler’s grandsons, Lyon Tyler Jr., died just last year at the age of 95.
Lyon Gardiner Tyler’s namesake ancestor was his mother’s 8th Great Grandfather Lyon Gardiner, the founder of Gardiner’s Island New York and my 12th Great-Grandfather.
That means I am Harrison’s 8th cousin, 5 times removed, so when he reads this he will friend me on Facebook.

THE 1950 CENSUS WAS RELEASED ON APRIL 1ST AND SO?
You would think it would be a national week of festival (at least for genealogists).
The raw census data was released, and for those anxious to find out what grandma and grandpa were up to, you can dig in now. However, the records are still in their infancy in terms of being searchable and readable without effort. The public can help, but it is tedious work.
I did find my dad and his family. Just like I thought they were farming. However, I have not been able to find other ancestors.
