King Frederick III of Denmark

GENEALOGIST FOR HIRE KING FREDERICK III OF DENMARK AND OTHER SCANDINAVIAN FASHION SURPRISES

I came across the story of an early Scandinavian naval crew aboard the Swedish Man-of-War Kronan. The forces were entirely male, and no women were allowed on board ships engaged in warfare. As a result, traditional women’s chores were performed by men who decked themselves out with feminine articles such as handbags and purses made of embroidered silken material with braided tassels, patterned silk ribbons, and silk rosettes, silk yarn, and sewing cases. Such articles were just as common as muskets and guns at the site of the wreckage of the Kronan.

trolle-ljungby-castle

Horn and pipeGENEALOGIST FOR HIRE MY ANCESTORS CAME FROM TROLLE-LJUNGBY (THE CASTLE ABOVE) WHERE THEY WERE ABO OR TENANT FARMERS FOR THE KING, WITH INHERITANCE RIGHTS

Among the castle’s collections are a medieval drinking horn and a hunting flute or pipe (above), also of considerable age. These two objects are displayed in a window of the castle. They are tied to an old legend that was first recorded in 1620. According to this legend, trolls used to assemble under a large erratic boulder, which is still on the estate. Sissela Ulfstand, a lady of the manor in the mid-1500s, wanted to know what happened at the boulder. She sent one of her men to investigate. When he arrived, he found the trolls holding a feast under the boulder raised on a golden column. They asked him to toast the troll chieftain, handing him the horn to drink from and asked him to play on the flute. However, a maiden managed to warn him not to drink and to ride home across the fields where the trolls could not reach him. He poured the horn’s contents out over his shoulder, scorching the side of his horse. He galloped across the fields to the castle, bringing the horn and flute. The trolls later demanded that Sissela Ulfstand return it, but she refused. Angered, they put a curse on her and the castle, saying that the castle would be burnt three times and her family would die out. They also warned that the horn and pipe must never leave the castle. Much folklore has arisen concerning the curse; it is a fact, however, that the castle burned down during the lifetime of Sissela Ulfstand during a failed rebellion attempt by Søren Norby.

3 legged dogGENEALOGIST FOR HIRE AN ISLAND OF 3-LEGGED DOGS

In 1569 King Johan III of Sweden proclaimed the island of Oland a royal hunting park. The inhabitants were prohibited from hunting, their weapons were confiscated, and only three-legged dogs who could not hunt the King’s game were permitted. The farmers of Oland were forced to watch the King’s game eat their cornfields. The establishment was abolished in 1801, but memories remain today, not least on Oland’s coat of arms on which the fallow deer still wears a royal red necklace.
