You’re Just a Slice of Your Ancestors
I’d shared with you the story of the client who had the love of fishing in his DNA, and how his ancestor was the inventor of the famous B.C. Milam fishing reels.
Another client and friend, whose father we confirmed through DNA, is a pretty good storyteller, started early in life, as a sportscaster, got into health care, became a health care CEO, and is still on the speaking circuit, talking about our health, particularly as it relates to health supplements.
I am now researching his family history and I can’t say that I am surprised to find out that grandfather was a sought after speaker in his area of expertise which was lumber, and ended up in 1931, becoming the first president of a little known spin-off of the lumber company, called Terminix, which was a big part of the foundation of today’s multi-billion dollar Service Master Corporation.
My client’s Great Grandfather, was an attorney, who was cited in the local newspaper as entertaining folks for a full day with his stories, and a cousin of his was a famous doctor at John Hopkins.
My client has also demonstrated interest in civil rights, and the fair treatment of minorities. No surprise that another great grandfather, a Missouri G.O.P. Congressman in 1869, was noted for a speech supporting the enfranchisement of former slaves (giving them political power).
My how the DNA tracks back!
Oh, and just adding this as a postscript, I was surprised to find out that ancestors on both sides also were early promoters of health supplements. Keep in mind, he was adopted so there is no “nurture” influence, it’s all “nature”!

I read about my Great Grandpa, but what about Great Grandma?
When we’re researching family histories, I search subscriber databases that include old newspaper articles. Until about the 1970s, nine of ten articles about a married woman were written with reference to the female as Mrs. John Smith, rather than by looking up Jane Smith. That actually makes historical research easier because I only have to search for one name.
It’s interesting how many times a husband may be barely mentioned in the local newspapers, but the wife’s activities in local charities, social clubs, and just visiting folks gave us clues to these families and enriched the stories we gather to share. There are many amazing stories about this one-half of our ancestry, that are not just interesting because they let our line continue to us today, but when you consider the hardships they endured such as trying not to die in childbirth, their lives are even more incredible.
