ANCESTRY- CUMBERLAND ISLAND AND ITS HIGH SOCIETY We recently visited Cumberland Island National Seashore and learned about the Carnegie family’s extensive involvement there. Thomas Morrison Carnegie was Andrew Carnegie's brother, who is best known as the founder of Carnegie Steel, Carnegie Hall, and the many Carnegie Libraries. Thomas was also an astute businessman, which gave him the wherewithal to acquire and build several mansions on Cumberland Island, including Dungeness, pictured before and after the 1959 fire, below. GENEALOGIST- CHEROKEE BILL'S BROTHER AND THE CONTINUED VIOLENCE We covered the bad deeds, apprehension, trial, and hanging of Crawford Goldsby, aka Cherokee Bill, on March 17, 1896, in the last couple of editions. His brother Clarence Goldsby sought revenge for his brother's death. He killed Ike Rogers, who had captured Cherokee Bill, on the platform of the Missouri Pacific Depot with at least one hundred witnesses. The witnesses reported that Clarence Goldsby shot Rogers multiple times, including in the back of the neck, and then stole the Winchester rifle that Rogers had taken from Cherokee Bill during his capture. GENEALOGIST- BALLING IN THE GRAND CANYON In 2011, we backpacked west of Grand Canyon National Park, into the Havasupai Indian Reservation. At the end of the trail lies the village of Supai on the valley floor of the Grand Canyon. It’s a short hike to the beautiful Havasu Falls, and you can even continue onto the Colorado River. ANCESTORS- MY MAYFLOWER ANCESTOR My 11th Great Grandfather, Stephen Hopkins (fl. 1579 – d. 1644), is my only Mayflower ancestor. GENEALOGY- A PLAY SURFACES AND IS PRODUCED 100 YEARS LATER I wrote in the February 2025 newsletter about Zola Neale Hurston and the work we did gathering all their family information for their foundation meeting. While living in Missouri, Hickman encountered members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveling from Kirtland, Ohio, to their new gathering place in Clay County, Missouri, and ultimately agreed to be baptized into the religion in 1838.
