day-of-the-dead-12511007Days of the Dead is by far the favorite holiday amongst those in the grave!

Here is the oldest article I could find referencing Halloween. The article appeared in a London paper in 1799 and referred to a new splendid Scotch spectacle, the New Royal Circus, and Mrs. Ratcliff’s celebrated Highland Story.

The origination of Halloween is allegedly All Hallow’s Eve. However, the first mention of that holiday was 21 years later.

1799 Halloween

Trick or Treat 1844The first reference to “Trick or Treat” was in 1844 as “Trick and Treat.” What a surprise that it was a reference to a political trick. Yes, 1844 was a presidential election year, and the trick was played on those Whigs. It seems the article was trying to divide the citizens of North Carolina based on geography. Some things never change. James Knox Polk went on to defeat Henry Clay.

Mail in ballotsThe first reference to mail-in ballots was in 1864 during the Civil War. Clearly, setting up safe polling places on a battleground might have been a challenge.
