Was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson essentially our first female president?
Many historians suggest that, six months after President Woodrow Wilson suffered from the Spanish Flu (mentioned in our last edition), he had a paralyzing stroke. For the rest of his term, all presidential business was conducted through her. She later described her status as one of “stewardship.”
One of our client’s ancestors James Daniel Brown of Wytheville, VA (her hometown also), had this picture of 16-year old Edith amongst his personal effects. They both attended Emory and Henry College. The family legend is that they were closer than just acquaintances. It is hard to know, but I would suggest not, as she was 13 years his junior, and by the time she was 19, James Daniel was married and living in TN.
An interesting fact about her is that while many people claim to be descendants of Pocahontas, she actually was!

Some census humor!
Read the commentary next to the occupation for Julia Brown in the 1860 census. Did the census taker decide to add an opinion, or record the informer’s opinion?
